On June 23, the 2026 International Forum on Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality, co-hosted by the China Energy Research Society and CPECC (China Power Engineering Consulting Group Corporation, a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Corporation), was held in Beijing. Centered on the theme "Carbon Peaking, Carbon Neutrality, and Comprehensive Green Transformation," the forum brought together representatives from government, industry, academia, and research sectors—both domestic and international. It aimed to advance high-level, high-quality international cooperation in green and low-carbon development and to contribute Chinese insights to the global response to climate change.
Shi Yubo, President of the China Energy Research Society; Zhang Xiaoqiang, former Deputy Director of the National Development and Reform Commission; and Zhai Qing, Deputy Director of the Committee on Population, Resources and Environment of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and former Vice Minister of Ecology and Environment, delivered opening remarks. Seven distinguished guests from government, industry, academia, and research—including Du Xiangwan, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Tang Bo, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; and Zhang Li, Deputy General Manager of CPECC and Executive Dean of the CPECC Carbon Neutrality Development Research Institute—delivered keynote speeches.
In his keynote speech, Zhang Li noted that the global energy transition has entered a new phase centered on electricity; the growth rate of electricity demand significantly outpaces that of overall energy demand, and renewable energy has become the primary driver of new installed capacity. Against the backdrop of comprehensive green transformation, the energy and power sector has evolved from a foundational support for economic and social development into a core engine for cultivating "new quality productive forces." He proposed adopting a systems-thinking approach to coordinate "generation, grid, load, and storage" while broadening pathways for the diversified utilization of non-fossil energy. He stated that CPECC is strategically investing in cutting-edge, original innovations—such as controllable nuclear fusion and high-altitude wind energy—developing innovative energy carriers like green hydrogen-based fuels, and implementing diverse scenarios that integrate computing power with electricity and combine transportation with energy. Through full-chain innovation, the company aims to support the construction of a new power system. CPECC looks forward to joining hands with global partners to build this new power system, drive the green and low-carbon energy transition, advance the development of a new energy system, and provide robust solutions for achieving carbon neutrality goals.

Parallel thematic forums were also held on the afternoon of the same day. The “Green Fuel Forum” explored the industrialization and technological innovation of green fuels, as well as the drive for independent and controllable green fuel capabilities in China; the “Regional Low-Carbon Transition Forum” focused on the outlook for local green and low-carbon development and energy transition practices during the “15th Five-Year Plan” period; and the “Seminar on Pathways to Zero-Carbon Parks and Energy-Carbon Management” conducted in-depth discussions on the challenges, countermeasures, and implementation pathways for zero-carbon parks amidst the policy shift from dual control of energy consumption to dual control of carbon emissions.

To date, the International Forum on Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality has been held for four consecutive editions, attracting over 600 guests from government, industry, academia, and research sectors.
